Midcoast Region
Situated at the southwest corner with its own deep-water harbor,
Rockland, Maine has long been renowned as the Gateway to Penobscot
Bay. While its roots lie in the fishing and marine industries,
Rockland has more recently seen a tremendous resurgence as a cultural
and arts center and is now one of Maine’s most popular getaway
destinations. Home to the world renowned Farnsworth Museum and
Wyeth Center and nearby Owls Head Transportation Museum, Rockland
has welcomed two new additions in 2005 that will further its renaissance:
the Maine Discovery Center for Tourism and Maine Lighthouse Museum,
and the newly renovated Strand Theater. Rockland is home to the
largest Windjammer fleet in the country. Travelers seeking the
luxury of Maine’s premier country inns, coupled with renowned
art museums, galleries, lighthouses and walks along Maine’s
rocky coast, will find Historic Inns of Rockland the ideal choice
for a romantic getaway, cultural soiree or small wedding. Stay
at any of the premier Historic Inns of Rockland, and all that Rockland
offers is within walking distance.
The former Shore Village Museum was relocated to the new Gateway Center and has reopened as the Maine Lighthouse Museum, overlooking Rockland Harbor, and within easy walking distance from any of the Historic Inns of Rockland. The new facility offers the largest collection of lighthouse artifacts in the country. This, along with the completely restored 1920’s art-deco Strand Theater, has clearly redefined the downtown and waterfront.
For those who enjoy spending days on the water, an abundance of
choices are within an easy stroll from all the Historic Inns of
Rockland. Take a day cruise on one of Maine’s famous historic
Windjammers, or rent a kayak and explore the coves and far reaches
of Penobscot Bay. Better yet, try your own hand at one on Maine’s
oldest traditions; take a ride on a lobster boat and get first-hand
experience at pulling traps. The Historic Inns of Rockland innkeepers
are tremendous resources in itinerary planning and will gladly
offer suggestions for a fun-filled day.
While still referred to as “The Gateway”, Rockland
has quickly emerged as “The Destination”. With all
the Maine Coast has to offer plus a new and exciting list of attractions,
why not pick Rockland for your real Maine vacation? As the state’s
motto recommends, we hope you will join us for the way life should
be.
